As part of a broader effort to accelerate AI adoption across the public sector, the government conducted a large-scale trial involving 20,000 civil servants to assess how generative AI tools, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, could support day-to-day work.
The results were promising. Over one-third of Microsoft 365 users who took part in the trial reported saving at least half an hour of productivity every day. The findings align with research from the Alan Turing Institute, which estimates that AI could assist with up to 41% of tasks across government, offering significant time-saving potential and a boost to overall efficiency.
While major public sector bodies, such as the DWP, Home Office, and Ministry of Justice, are already unlocking the power of AI, many emerging organisations are still hindered by legacy systems, fragmented data, skills gaps, and cultural resistance. CloudSource brings clarity and momentum by breaking down barriers with a strategic roadmap that makes AI adoption secure and transformational, allowing you to move forward with confidence.

AI's Growing Role in the Public Sector
According to the Microsoft 365 Copilot Experiment: Cross-Government Findings report, AI is already having a measurable impact across the UK Civil Service, boosting productivity, reducing administrative time, and modernising the way government operates.
According to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the government's AI trial saved civil servants an average of 26 minutes per day—equivalent to nearly two weeks of work per year. At Companies House, staff use Copilot to handle routine customer queries and speed up tasks like drafting responses and updating records. At the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), work coaches are using it to personalise advice for job seekers, helping them get faster, more tailored support.
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle called the results a clear signal that "AI isn't just a future promise – it's a present reality," helping government operate smarter, reduce red tape, and deliver better value for taxpayers. Backing this, Microsoft UK CEO Darren Hardman said: "As a strategic technology partner to the UK Government, we have an amazing opportunity to help improve both the quality of the services people receive and the way they access them. And the really exciting part is, this is just the beginning."
