Last year, in partnership with Microsoft, we brought together key UK regulators for a landmark Regulatory Roundtable, creating an ecosystem where decision-makers could share ideas, challenges, and opportunities about the use of AI in regulation. It was a powerful forum that included organisations such as the MHRA and encouraged open dialogue on how innovation and collaboration can shape smarter, safer regulation in rapidly evolving sectors.
One year on, we’re proud to see that vision becoming reality.

The UK has officially become the first country in the world to join the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, marking a significant step in shaping the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare. This follows the MHRA’s ongoing work at the forefront of AI in regulation, a topic we proudly highlighted during our Regulatory Roundtable last year.
Back then, we discussed emerging initiatives like AI Airlock, MHRA’s pioneering regulatory sandbox for AI medical devices. It’s encouraging to see these initiatives now not only developing but also positioning the UK at the forefront of global efforts to promote safe, effective AI in healthcare.
As a founding Pioneer Country in the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, the UK, through the MHRA, will help establish international standards, share safety insights, and promote more transparent and collaborative AI oversight. This includes utilising homegrown successes like AI Airlock, which has already enabled innovators to test AI tools for lung diagnostics and personalised cancer care in real-world settings, all under regulatory guidance.
The MHRA is also refining medical device regulation for advanced AI, including adaptive and generative models, while collaborating with NICE, the NHS, and researchers to develop strong real-world evidence.
This moment signifies not only international recognition of the UK’s leadership but also a tangible result of the groundwork discussed at our roundtable. We’re proud to see these ideas progressing from discussion to action, supporting the UK to lead responsibly, collaboratively, and with patient safety at the centre.
